Co-founder of Employability Bridge Ambalavanan Ramachandran says that companies from different sectors are now visiting campuses. Smaller firms, start ups and product companies earlier used to recruit five or 10 and now there is 30 per cent to 40 per cent increase.
If you’re an engineer then landing a decent job during placement season – which began last week with NASSCOM’s blessings – ought to be a cinch. But this logic that is already wearing thin for metropolitan colleges, is only worse for smaller colleges in tier-2 and tier 3 cities. While students crib that a majority of leading companies visit only elite institutions in major cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Hyderabad, the recruiting companies claim that students in non metro cities lack basic guidance on campus placements.
The State has around 400 IT companies, including start-ups that recruit engineering graduates every year.One of the problems that colleges and students in smaller cities face is lack of of knowledge about what the companies expect of students.

‘Flag 2013’, an event of Confederation of Indian Industry and Employability Bridge, was held at Jansons Institute of Technology here recently. Nearly 650 students from 16 colleges attended the recruitment drive.
Over 800 students from nine colleges across Tamil Nadu who are part of CII-Employability Bridge initiative participated at the first job fair organised under the initiative in Tiruchi on Saturday.
CII is organising a job fair on March 17 in Tiruchi to facilitate recruitment of engineers and management graduates from colleges (based at Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities) who have participated in the employability enhancement programme offered through the CII Employability Bridge initiative. The event provides a unique opportunity for the participating companies, as they can select from a pool of industry-ready talents.
CII’s Employability Bridge initiative would help around 100 companies in Tamil Nadu to identify potential candidates for fresh recruitment from over 30 colleges in Tamil Nadu. To ensure quality education and bridge the gap between industry and academia, CII launched the ‘Employability Bridge’ early this year. Around 15000 students are expected to benefit from this initiative. CII has identified Surgeforth Technologies as the program management partner for this initiative.
With complaints that the overwhelming majority of 3.5 million graduates churned out annually by India’s 509 universities and 31,000 colleges are nowhere near industry ready growing louder by the day, in a renewed attempt to address the growing mismatch between college education and needs of India Inc, on January 18 the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) southern region (membership: 1,400 member-corporates and 100 colleges), launched an online portal titled Employability Bridge (EB) in partnership with Chennai-based SurgeForth Technologies Pvt Ltd, a workforce management solutions company. The objective of this online portal (www.employability-bridge.com) is to provide a common platform for corporates, and government and private arts, science, engineering and management colleges. Additionally, EB provides industry-driven employability training to students, a placement management system for academia and cost-effective placement aggregation services for industry for on-and-off campus recruitment.

The programme aimed at training the students to suit industry needs making them more employable. It has been developed with special curriculum which would be taught in colleges, CII Tamil Nadu State council Chairman N K Ranganath told reporters here.
